Fir is an excellent ornamental tree species and also an important choice for making Christmas trees, with high ornamental value. So how do you plant a potted fir? Let's take a look at the potted cultivation methods for fir below.

I. Potted Planting Methods for Fir

1. Collecting seedlings and stumps: This is done around the Beginning of Spring, before the resin begins to flow. Keep the soil ball intact and protect the fibrous roots; the soil ball must not crumble (this is the key to survival). Seal the root head and wounds, and remove two-fifths to one-half of the branches and foliage to maintain a balance between roots and shoots. Fir is best dug from after the Beginning of Spring to the Spring Equinox, as the survival rate is highest when dug at this time.

2. Planting: Use a wide, large soil pot, with loose, breathable, clean soil that has not been disinfected or sterilized. When the soil has been filled to two-thirds, water once to let it absorb; the next day, add another one-third of dry soil to absorb moisture, maintaining appropriate dryness and humidity. In the early stage, to prevent prolonged rainy weather, a ring of plastic film can be wrapped around the slightly raised soil mound, just enough to cover the pot or the planting hole. Place it in a wind-sheltered, warm, sunny spot.

3. Routine care: During the growing season, a small amount of diluted fertilizer water mainly based on nitrogen fertilizer can be applied to the potted fir. In the later growth stage, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote lignification, which helps it overwinter. Pay attention to cold protection in winter. Fir should be transplanted or root-pruned once every 3-4 years to promote root development. Fir grows slowly during the seedling stage, so when transplanting, bring along plenty of native soil, and strengthen tending and management after transplanting. After the seedling reaches 4 years of age, growth gradually speeds up.

4. Pest and disease control: (1) Damping-off of seedlings. During the seedling emergence period, spray 0.5%-1% Bordeaux mixture weekly for prevention; during the disease onset period, 0.5%-1% ferrous sulfate can be used for control; (2) Standing tree decay. Improve the sanitary conditions of the woodland and promptly remove diseased and decayed wood from the woodland; (3) Aphids. On dewy mornings, spray 0.1% dimethoate liquid for control.

How do you plant a potted fir? That is all we have to share about the potted cultivation methods for fir. The fir has a straight trunk, dense branches and foliage, and stays evergreen all year round. It has high planting value and can be planted in gardens or grown in pots as a Christmas tree.
