Bougainvillea blooms are very beautiful, and the flowers are abundant. If cared for well, it can bloom into a big flower ball, with only flowers and no leaves visible. Of course, this also requires good techniques to achieve. Recently, a flower friend said that their bougainvillea blooms quite a lot, but the flowers on the branch tips stop growing. What is going on? Let's take a look.

1. Cause

The branch tips stop growing because of the flowering period. The nutrients absorbed by the roots are all supplied to the flowers, with no excess nutrients left for the branches and leaves. The branches and leaves cannot get enough nutrition, so they temporarily stop growing. This is also a natural phenomenon, so there is no need to worry too much. After the flowering period passes, new branches will grow again.

2. Precautions

Bougainvillea is currently in its flowering period. Blooming consumes a large amount of water and fertilizer. The flower pot is not very large either, so the nutrients in the soil are limited, which means it is lacking fertilizer. However, even though it lacks fertilizer now, you must not fertilize it! Fertilizing now would cause nutrients to suddenly surge, which would promote branch growth. Then the flowers would not get enough nutrients and would easily drop. Therefore, no matter what kind of flower it is, it is best not to fertilize during the flowering period, as this will shorten the flowering period. If you want to fertilize, wait until the flowers fade before fertilizing.

3. Pruning

After the flowering period passes, prune the plant again. Cut off the faded flowers and spent stems, the old leaves at the bottom, or overly dense branches and leaves and thin small branches. This helps make the stem nodes thick and strong and the branches well developed, preparing for the next bloom.

4. Promote re-differentiation of flower buds

After the flowering period passes and pruning is completed, apply an appropriate amount of fertilizer to the flowers to supplement with a multi-element compound fertilizer. Then, about 10 days later, if you want it to bloom, give it phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, combined with water control and light, to promote the next bloom.

If bougainvillea is managed properly, as long as the temperature is suitable, it can bloom all year round.
