Crassula 'Red Devil' is a succulent plant in the Crassulaceae family, genus Crassula. It is a subshrub, grown in pots for ornament, and very lovely. Subshrubs do not easily grow tall. The plant's leaves are opposite and tightly arranged along the stems, and the leaves are long and narrow. New leaves are green, old leaves are brown or dark brown; in seasons with a large temperature difference, the leaves of the whole plant turn purplish red, very beautiful. Crassula 'Red Devil' blooms in clusters of small white flowers. It is cross-pollinated, and the flowers are rather small.

Crassula 'Red Devil'

Crassula 'Red Devil' likes a warm, dry environment with plenty of sunlight. It is drought-tolerant and can endure indoor low temperatures of minus 4 degrees as long as the potting soil is kept dry. At minus 4 degrees the leaves will look slightly lackluster with a sense of frost damage, but it is nothing to worry about; when the temperature rises again they will plump back up. Crassula 'Red Devil' tolerates partial shade slightly; after long periods of shade the leaves turn green and the leaf bases tend to become leggy and elongated, and the leaf stems become tender and weak. Although the plant needs light, it is best not to expose it to full sun in summer; appropriate shading is enough, along with less water.

Crassula 'Red Devil' can be propagated by beheading and cuttings in early spring, and the remaining stem will put out cluster of adventitious buds; it can also be propagated by leaf cuttings. Take healthy leaves and insert them into slightly moist soil, keep them in a cool, ventilated place and wait for new roots and leaves to grow. During this period, if the soil dries out completely, you can give water. It is a very easy variety to propagate.

For the growing soil, you can use a fertile soil mix with good drainage and aeration. Kite uses cinder mixed with a bit of peat, vermiculite and perlite; as long as it is roughly breathable it is fine, and the soil surface is covered with granular natural river sand. Crassula 'Red Devil' grows very noticeably in the cool season, and in summer it briefly goes dormant due to the high temperature, but not for very long. Throughout summer Kite also gives plenty of water, basically pouring it over the top of the plant. With a good root system there will be no problem. One thing growers need to note is that in summer Crassula 'Red Devil' should avoid overhead watering, otherwise it easily rots. Generally in summer water is given two hours after the same descent.
