Breathing gymnastics evolved from breathing exercises and can effectively advance and enhance the respiratory function of patients with COPD, chronic bronchitis and other conditions, thereby improving and changing their overall condition. In coordinated movements of the limbs and trunk, each exercise can start with 10 to 20 repetitions and gradually increase, helping the functional efficiency of the motor system, blood circulation system and other systems, and improving physiological function as a whole.

Arm-swinging relaxation

There can be many different breathing exercises; the simplest are various posture-coordination methods such as shoulder-and-back relaxation, arm-swinging relaxation, chest-lumbar-sacral relaxation and full-body relaxation. Shoulder-and-back relaxation is the first movement, and can also be called the preparatory posture: spread the legs and feet apart, place both hands on the hips, lean the upper body slightly forward, and bend both elbows at 90°. Continue to relax the shoulders, back, chest and abdomen, then move both arms and shoulder joints alternately in circular motions from front to back and from back to front, taking care to move slowly and gently.

Next perform the arm-swinging relaxation movement. After completing the shoulder-and-back relaxation posture, keep the feet apart in a standing position, let both arms hang naturally, and after relaxing, swing them naturally forward and backward, allowing the height to increase naturally from small to large, then from large to small; chest-lumbar-sacral relaxation follows the arm-swinging movement. First rub the palms and backs of the hands together, then place the thumbs forward on the hips, and then use both hands with slight force to massage up and down from the waist to the sacrum to the buttocks. Then alternate the direction of both hands in circular motions on the left side of the waist, taking care to keep the legs and knees straight while doing so, and gradually enlarge the circles and then make them smaller.

Shoulder-and-back relaxation

Finally, when doing the full-body relaxation movement, first stand calmly, let both arms hang naturally, slightly close the eyes and lips, touch the upper palate with the tongue, and use breathing methods to adjust and relax the whole body, exhaling first and then inhaling, doing it to the fullest but without forcing it. You can also silently say "quiet" while exhaling and "relax" while inhaling, and guide and integrate this into your awareness to send it throughout the body.
