Chinese lobelia has many uses, mainly for treating edema, eczema and other symptoms. It also has quite a few pharmacological effects: it can act on the nervous system, and in addition it also has effects on blood pressure lowering and respiration, and of course it is also used fairly widely in clinical medicine.

1. Functions and indications

It mainly treats several conditions. These include promoting diuresis, reducing swelling and detoxifying, treating eczema and traumatic injuries, and it is also effective against blood flukes and snake and insect bites.

① Clearing heat and detoxifying: if someone has been bitten by a snake or a centipede, 120 grams of fresh herb can be crushed and taken with rice wine or boiled water, once a day; in more serious cases, increase it by one dose, or crush fresh herb with salt and apply it to the wound.

If there is a carbuncle or swelling, fresh Chinese lobelia can also be crushed with salt and applied externally. If there is otitis media, it can be pressed for juice, filtered, and then combined with white liquor and dripped into the ear. If there is a tumor, it can be used together with barbed skullcap and spreading hedyotis.

② Promoting diuresis and reducing swelling: if there is cirrhosis or ascites as well as kidney disease, it can be used in prescriptions. If there is eczema or athlete's foot, fresh or dried material can also be decocted in water, after which gauze is soaked and applied to the affected area.

2. Pharmacological effects

① Diuretic effect: its powder can help promote the production of urine.

② Promoting bile secretion: injecting its extract can effectively increase bile secretion.

③ Inhibiting the central nervous system: it also has a strong effect on the nervous system and can inhibit the central nervous system.

④ Stimulating arteries: its water decoction and similar preparations have a stimulating effect on arteries, but if the dose is relatively large, a person will experience respiratory paralysis, which may lead to death.
