How to Grow Peonies? Detailed Guide to Cultivation Methods and Precautions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
To grow peonies, use loose, fertile, acidic soil; do not choose alkaline soil. When the weather is dry or the temperature is high, just water appropriately. Ensure sufficient sunlight, and fertilize 3 times a year. For propagation, root cuttings and layering can be used. Prevent pests and diseases, and deal with them promptly once discovered.

I. Growing Environment

1. Soil: To grow peonies, use loose, fertile, acidic soil. Do not choose alkaline soil, as it is not conducive to their growth and may also cause yellow leaves.

2. Watering: It is a drought-tolerant plant and does not need frequent watering normally. When the weather is dry or the temperature is high, just water appropriately. Do not water too much; occasional rain exposure is also fine.

3. Light: During cultivation, ensure sufficient sunlight. If the sunlight is too intense, take appropriate shading measures to prevent the leaves from being scorched by strong light.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilizing three times a year is enough. Apply a base fertilizer when planting in the pot, apply a high-phosphorus fertilizer once a week after the flowering period, and apply an additional fertilizer once in autumn and winter.

II. Propagation Methods

1. Root cutting propagation: When dividing the plant, cut root sections 5-10 cm long, insert them into deeply plowed and leveled furrows, cover with a layer of rare earth, and then water thoroughly.

2. Layering propagation: Pass the young shoots through the hole of the pot and lead them into the flowerpot. As they grow, keep adding soil, and at the same time ensure the pot soil remains moist. They will root before long. Before winter begins, just cut off the stems below the pot.

III. Common Pests and Diseases

Common pests and diseases include anthracnose, root rot, red spider mites, scarab beetles, and so on. Pests and diseases must be prevented early. After they appear, use pesticides for spraying according to the severity of the disease.
