How do you completely get rid of fungus gnats? 4 free methods that work in 2 days
Lure method
As the name suggests, it means placing some special things around the flower pot to attract and trap the fungus gnats.
1. Yellow sticky traps with a special scent
Use a thin stick to secure the sticky trap and hang it slightly above the plant; too high or too low will affect the trapping effect.
Note that the sticky board should be replaced when the sticky area reaches 60%.
2. A small pot of soapy water or sugar water
Sugar water will stick to the fungus gnats, while soap contains fatty acids, which after decomposition become a natural wax coating; once the fungus gnats touch it, they dehydrate and die.
Dissolve soap in water until the pH reaches 1~2 (you can test it with pH paper); be sure to use soft water such as rainwater or cooled boiled water to dissolve it, and you can also add a small amount of sugar water to the soapy water.
Isolation method
The humidity and temperature of the soil are favorable for the reproduction and growth of black insect eggs, so covering the surface of the potting soil with a layer of dry sand and gravel soil also helps eliminate fungus gnats.
Of course, isolation is not just about using soil; remember to also give them sunlight at the right time and keep the area ventilated.
Spraying method
Spray and drench with acetamiprid diluted 3000 times or potassium permanganate diluted 1000 times, spraying about once every five days; after three or four times, it can effectively kill adults and larvae.
Spraying pesticide is more thorough for pest control, but it carries risks, so gardening friends should be careful when using it.
Homemade insecticide method
Many things in daily life have bactericidal effects; they are not only environmentally friendly, but also have a certain effect when used to eliminate fungus gnats.
1. Soak tobacco shreds in water and spray
Nicotine in tobacco can effectively kill insects. Take a few cigarettes, pull out about 20 g of tobacco shreds, add 500 ml of clean water and soak for 24 hours, then spray the filtered liquid on the leaf surface, soil and around the bottom of the pot.
2. Mosquito coils to kill insects
Mosquito coils contain transfluthrin, which can effectively kill insects.
Cover the plant with plastic film, place it in a small room, light a mosquito coil, and fumigate for a few minutes to effectively clear out fungus gnats; soaking mosquito coils directly in water and pouring it into the potting soil can also kill larvae and eggs.
3. Soak garlic in water and spray
Garlic has a strong bactericidal effect. Crush one garlic bulb, pour in half a liter of clean water, soak for one hour, then spray it on the leaves to effectively kill insects.
