What are the ways to display indoor bonsai in the home?
The potted flowers suitable for display in family living rooms are diverse, and the most commonly used at present are potted flowering plants and bonsai. Figure 6-31 shows a family potted flower display.
The display of family potted flowers should follow the following principles.
Since ancient times, bonsai has been an excellent artwork for indoor furnishings and courtyard arrangements. Placing a bonsai in a living room can make the four walls shine, and planting a few bonsai in the courtyard can add character to a small yard. Ornamental value is the first priority of bonsai as a decorative item; second, the harmony between the plant and the environment should be considered. The figure shows an indoor Syzygium buxifolium bonsai display.
1. Display position
For the display of bonsai, consideration is generally given to the size and type of the bonsai, the matching of pots and stands, the enhancement of the environment, the distance between buildings and the bonsai, the height of the bonsai, and the relationship between the bonsai. Indoor displays mostly use medium, small, and miniature bonsai artworks; only when they are placed reasonably and displayed properly can a beautiful artistic effect be achieved.
2. Display height and angle
For the same bonsai, the effects when viewed from above, at eye level, and from below are completely different. For example, tree-stump bonsai should have their placement method chosen according to their styling characteristics and style.
(1) Viewed from below: raised-root style, cascade style, and weeping-branch style bonsai are suitable for viewing from below.
(2) Viewed at eye level: horizontal-trunk style, straight-trunk style, clump style, and coiled-trunk style bonsai are suitable for viewing at eye level.
(3) Viewed from above: sparse-branch style, companion-planted style, and mixed-grafted style bonsai are suitable for viewing from above.
3. Display background
The display of bonsai should coordinate with the changes of the seasons, such as the clear and pleasant smile of spring scenery, the richness of summer scenery, the desolation of autumn scenery, and the stillness of winter scenery. When placing bonsai, attention should be paid to the enhancement of the indoor environment, and the background tone for bonsai is generally best in light colors.
4. Precautions for display
When displaying bonsai, avoid disorder at all costs. The distance between each pot is best when sparse and dense are alternated, just right. The size, shape, texture, and color of pots and stands should be harmonious and unified, and set each other off beautifully.
5. Matching of bonsai
Bonsai is three-dimensional painting. If indoors it is matched with Chinese paintings as well as hanging scenes, couplets, poetry, and calligraphy inscribed for bonsai, and gently pointed out by the inscriber, it becomes an integrated whole and can make the whole room shine.
