How to grow bougainvillea? Do these 3 things and you'll have more flowers than leaves

Bougainvillea flowers are unusual, brightly colored, and have a long blooming period, which fascinates many flower lovers. But some flower lovers get only lush green leaves and no flowers - what's going on? Let's take a look!

- Insufficient light -
Bougainvillea needs a lot of light during its growing period. It is a sun-loving plant: the stronger the sunlight, the more it blooms. If the growing environment lacks light and is shaded, it will bloom less or not at all, and may even drop a large number of leaves.
- Insufficient nutrients -
Bougainvillea has a well-developed root system. If planted in the ground, its roots can grow several meters, but potted bougainvillea doesn't have that many nutrients. If you don't repot or fertilize for a long time, it will bloom much less. So generally repot once every 2 years, and it's best to repot before the buds sprout.
Before repotting, stop watering the pot for a few days; drier potting soil makes it easier to remove the plant without damaging the roots. First remove part of the old soil, keeping 1/2-2/3 of the soil, because bougainvillea has abundant roots that usually coil around the bottom of the pot - don't let them break apart or be damaged, which is safer.
If you're not confident, or if the plant is already growing very vigorously, you can simply move it to a slightly larger pot and fill in soil.

Bougainvillea quite likes fertilizer. For ground-planted bougainvillea, you can usually collect some fish intestines, fish innards, and chicken manure and bury them beside the plant, not directly under it, and the bougainvillea will bloom vigorously and for a long time.
For potted bougainvillea, fertilize once a month, mainly with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and control nitrogen fertilizer, which helps flower bud differentiation and ensures strong flower buds.
- Water control before blooming -
During the flower bud differentiation stage of bougainvillea, the amount of water has a major influence. Generally, you need to control water about 30 days before blooming. Each time, wait until the plant's leaves wilt before watering again, cutting off water at least three times, and after a month resume normal watering and care. There's a saying: frequent watering means no flowers, little watering means flowers keep coming - that's bougainvillea. Many people say bougainvillea needs to be "tortured," and that's what they mean.
Normally, bougainvillea is relatively drought-tolerant. Water only when the soil is dry, and water thoroughly when you do; soil that is too wet will cause leaf drop and root rot.
