Elm bonsai: rugged and ancient, turning decay into a wonder of nature

Deciduous tree, up to 25 m tall, with a rounded spherical crown. Bark grayish-black, longitudinally fissured and rough. Branchlets gray, often arranged in two rows.
Morphological characteristics
Sun-loving, cold-tolerant, drought-resistant, intolerant of waterlogging. Able to adapt to dry, cool climates; prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil, and can also grow in arid, poor, and mildly saline-alkaline soils, growing rather quickly.
Elliptic-ovate, apex pointed, base slightly oblique, margin singly serrate. Flowers bloom before the leaves in March to April, purple-brown, clustered on one-year-old branches. Samara nearly round or obovate, with a notch at the apex. The seed is located in the center of the samara, and the fruit ripens in April to May.
At 30 years, the tree is 17 m tall with a diameter at breast height of 42 cm. Its lifespan can exceed a hundred years. It has strong sprouting ability, tolerates pruning well, has a deep taproot and well-developed lateral roots, and is highly resistant to wind and effective at soil retention. It also has relatively strong resistance to smoke, dust, and toxic gases such as hydrogen fluoride.
Species distribution
The elm is mostly distributed in the northeast, north, northwest, and southwest provinces and regions. It is also found in Korea, Russia, and Mongolia. It grows on hillsides, in valleys, on flatland, on hills, and in sandy mounds below 1,000-2,500 m in elevation. It is cultivated in the provinces along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It is also a common tree in rural areas of the North China and Huaibei Plains.
Bonsai characteristics
Elms, especially old elm stumps growing in the wild, have endured years of human chopping and hacking, or wind stripping, rain erosion, and animal gnawing, gradually forming many different and peculiar postures. Some have gnarled roots and tangled knots, rugged and ancient; some turn decay into a wonder of nature, with withered roots and new leaves, opening up a world of their own - excellent material for making bonsai.
