Exercise-induced asthma refers to the appearance of symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing 5 to 15 minutes after strenuous exercise, with a decline in relevant lung function indices and wheezing sounds on examination; in some cases, emotional excitement, tension and restlessness, or anger can also easily trigger exercise-induced asthma.

In addition, ordinary exercise-induced asthma may resolve or disappear on its own within 30 to 60 minutes after an attack, forming a refractory period of about one hour.

Terbutaline

However, if left to develop unchecked, it may lead to fatal outcomes such as sudden death and respiratory failure in people with exercise-induced asthma. If strenuous exercise is performed, about half of people may feel unwell after exercising. For patients prone to exercise-induced asthma, this phase is called the refractory period, lasting about one hour; if they continue to exercise, about half of them will not experience symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath or chest tightness.

For patients with exercise-induced asthma, proactive measures such as prevention can be taken, for example taking preventive medication before exercise, doing warm-up exercises, avoiding inhalation of dry cold air, and stopping immediately when symptoms appear; in addition, comprehensive protection and management should be carried out in aspects such as emotions and diet, to relieve and prevent the appearance of exercise-induced asthma symptoms.

Practicing Tai Chi

Specifically, about two hours before exercise, short-acting beta2-agonists such as salbutamol aerosol can be inhaled, about 200 micrograms each time. There is also terbutaline aerosol, 25 to 500 micrograms each time; sodium cromoglycate aerosol, 2 to 40 micrograms each time. Oral salbutamol 4 mg, or oral terbutaline 2.5 mg, and so on, can also effectively prevent exercise-induced asthma. Warm-up before exercise means doing more preparatory activities, and to avoid inhaling dry cold air you can wear a mask, and so on.
