Is the clivia actually a type of orchid?

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
These are two completely different flowers. Although the former contains the character "lan" (orchid) in its name, it belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and its characteristics are entirely different from those of orchids. The latter belongs to the Orchidaceae family, which includes many types of orchids.

I. Clivia

1. It is a very beautiful flower, so many people buy it and place it in their homes for decoration. Its flowers are umbrella-shaped, with 6 petals, all identical in appearance, generally in the orange color range, with 6 stamens.

2. At its base there is a relatively large bulb that looks very much like an onion. It belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, genus Clivia, and originates from southern Africa. It is a perennial, and its flowers generally last 30-50 days, often blooming in late winter and early spring, and sometimes around New Year's Day.

3. It fears overly intense, harsh sunlight, and a relatively cool area is most suitable for its growth. Do not place it in an area with too high a temperature. Its flowers and leaf shape are both very beautiful; it can be used both for foliage viewing and for flower appreciation.

II. Orchids

1. Orchids are generally epiphytic, or grow on the ground. They have many leaves, generally growing at the base of the pseudobulb or toward the lower part, shaped like lanceolate, and also oval. At their base there are generally many relatively broad sheaths that grow around the pseudobulb, and they also have joints.

2. Its inflorescence is racemose, with many flowers in all kinds of colors, very beautiful. Its cultivation history is very long, and its place of origin is our country, where it has survived for over a thousand years. Many men of letters and scholars have praised it.

III. Whether the former belongs to the latter

1. The former and the latter have fundamentally different characteristics, so they are not the same kind. The former is Amaryllidaceae, the latter is Orchidaceae, and their genera and species are all different.

2. Therefore they are two different plants, and the former does not belong to the latter at all. Many people have a misunderstanding, thinking that because the former contains the character "lan" (orchid) in its name, it has a genus-and-species relationship with the latter. In fact, apart from their names, they have no relationship at all.
