If you have a somewhat large balcony or rooftop, do not leave it empty. You can turn it from a bare, blank space into a lush little vegetable garden with your own hands. All you need to prepare is flower pots, soil, fertilizer, and some vegetable roots, tops, and seeds from the kitchen, and that is all.

A fellow vegetable gardener named Xiaoyu buried the leftover yam roots from the kitchen into a large flower pot, with other vegetables planted alongside. It did not matter. They all grew together.

In January, when the other vegetables were also harvested, the flower pot was tipped over and the soil dug up, and what a surprise was inside. She had never expected so many yams to have grown.

Tomatoes are a very easy vegetable to grow. The tomatoes you buy and cook with in the kitchen every day have seeds inside that can all be planted. As long as the flower pot is a bit larger and the soil is somewhat fertile, you can grow an abundant harvest of tomatoes.

Laden with fruit, the good-looking and nutritious tomatoes have finally ripened. Although the process was a bit slow, the wait was ultimately very worthwhile.

If someone in the family really loves eating chili peppers, then growing a few chili plants is a perfect fit. Just find some chili peppers or red chili peppers in the kitchen, separate out the seeds, and sow them directly. They sprout faster than you would imagine.

For chili peppers, be sure to give them plenty of sun. During the flowering stage and fruiting stage, fertilize often. If growing them in flower pots, use pots with a larger diameter, so the chili peppers will bear more.

If there are sweet potatoes sprouting in the kitchen, do not throw them away. A fellow vegetable gardener named Yilu planted them directly into the soil. All they need is watering, and in a week many sprouts will emerge.

Still just watering and sunbathing. After another week, there will be more and more green leaves. You can pinch off branches to propagate more, and you can also pick the leaves to cook with.

Potted chili peppers and potted tomatoes are both very easy to grow. If you want to try potted pumpkins, that works too. Save the pumpkin seeds from the kitchen and sow them into a somewhat larger flower pot. Use fertile leaf mold or peat soil for the soil.

During the flowering stage, pollinate them by hand simply, and perhaps they will grow into a pumpkin of no small size, full of a sense of accomplishment.
