To get orchids to produce high-quality strong shoots, these 3 factors must be considered.

Orchids sprouting abundantly is what we orchid growers dream of. But experienced orchid growers do not one-sidedly pursue the number of sprouts; they pay more attention to the quality of the sprouts, and use how many strong shoots an orchid produces as the standard for judging the level of orchid-growing skill. So exactly how do you get orchids to produce strong shoots? Expert orchid growers do it with these 3 techniques:

First, during the orchid's dormant period, light must be sufficient and the temperature difference between day and night must be large. Natural laws do not change according to human will. In a natural environment, orchids have a dormant period of 3 to 5 months each year, varying from plant to plant. During this time, on the surface the orchid does not grow, but in fact it is accumulating energy to prepare for blooming and sprouting the following year.

During the orchid's dormant period, temperatures are low and the angle of direct sunlight is small, so you can safely and boldly let the orchid receive sufficient light, so as to store up enough energy to nurture strong shoots.

At the same time, note that during the dormant period the temperature in the orchid room must not be too high; during the day it generally should not exceed 15°C, so as to minimize interference with the orchid's dormant period and the consumption of nutrients through respiration. This is the basic condition for ensuring that the orchid produces strong shoots the following year.

Second, moderate fertilizing promotes strong shoots. When orchid shoots and new roots are sprouting, the plant needs more nutrients. If appropriate fertilizer is not given, it will be hard to get strong shoots later, and it will also affect the future growth and blooming of the orchid plant. Therefore, each year from the Spring Equinox to Qingming, you can choose clear weather to apply organic fertilizer once, and then apply it once more after half a month. As long as these two fertilizations follow the principle of being dilute and thin so as not to cause fertilizer burn, they are very beneficial for orchids producing strong shoots.

Third, appropriately withholding water promotes strong shoots. Generally speaking, after an orchid finishes blooming there is a brief period of rest and recovery, and you can use this period to appropriately withhold water from the orchid once, that is, let the potting soil become on the dry side once. Practice has shown that when an orchid is in the budding stage, keeping the growing medium dry for a short time is conducive to producing more sprouts and strong sprouts.
