Sichuan pepper has always been one of the essential seasonings in the home, but not many people grow it at home; most of it is grown on a large scale. In fact, Sichuan pepper is fairly easy to grow. I myself have grown a Sichuan pepper tree. Here I will share with you how to grow Sichuan pepper at home.

1. The habits of Sichuan pepper

Sichuan pepper is grown in most parts of our country and has strong adaptability. Sichuan pepper likes loose, fertile soil, tolerates drought, and likes sunlight. It does not like waterlogged soil; waterlogging easily causes root rot and plant death.

2. Planting Sichuan pepper

Sowing. There are many ways to grow Sichuan pepper; you can use sowing, cuttings, and division. When I grew it, I used the sowing method. This is because Sichuan pepper seeds are easier to find than Sichuan pepper trees, so I just used the sowing method to grow it. Because Sichuan pepper seeds are oily, they do not sprout easily.

Before sowing, you can first soak them in 1% alkaline water for about two days, then rub off the oil on the surface. Of course, if you find this step troublesome, you can sow directly and scatter more seeds, because the germination rate is not high. In about three weeks you will see Sichuan pepper seedlings coming up.

Generally after about one month, they can be transplanted. You can find a slightly larger flower pot, put in 4 parts garden soil, 3 parts humus soil, and 3 parts river sand, and transplant the Sichuan pepper seedlings into the pot; one or two plants per pot is enough. Then water thoroughly and move to a cool place to let the seedlings recover.

Cuttings. Also, let me mention the cutting method. You can find a Sichuan pepper tree about three years old, choose a one-year-old new branch, and cut off about 15 cm as a cutting. After cutting, soak it in diluted rooting solution for about two hours. Cut off the leaves on the cutting, keeping only two to four leaves. Insert it into a flower pot and cover with plastic film. In about two weeks it will generally take root.

3. Daily care of Sichuan pepper

Watering. Sichuan pepper is fairly drought-tolerant, so do not water too much. Generally, water when the potting soil turns pale, and water thoroughly each time. Usually place it in a spot with fairly abundant sunlight for growth.

Fertilizing. Generally, a Sichuan pepper tree will only bear Sichuan pepper after two years. Usually fertilize reasonably according to the growth of the Sichuan pepper; about once a month you can give the Sichuan pepper some diluted cake fertilizer.

Pruning. Sichuan pepper trees tolerate pruning fairly well. Generally keep about 5 main branches, and the main branches are best staggered in position, as this helps every branch receive sunlight. On each main branch, keep three or four side branches.
