Choosing the right pot is very important when growing flowers, so the plant grows well and blooms a lot without yellowing leaves

A flower friend asked how large and how deep a pot should be used for white magnolia and banana shrub. It is a good opportunity to use this question to explain how pots should be chosen for woody flowers.
For a newly bought woody flower, if the plant is around half a meter tall and the crown is not very large, a 20 cm pot is enough. If the crown is around 40 to 50 cm, I suggest choosing a pot with a 30 cm diameter. Especially for woody plants, try not to choose a tall pot. A tall pot contains more soil. If it is grown outdoors, ventilation is better and light is more abundant, so it can dry out relatively quickly. Choosing a tall pot to grow it is acceptable. Its potting soil can go through a quick drying process. Because ventilation is good, root rot is also less likely.
If you are growing it indoors, indoor ventilation is much worse than outdoors. If you encounter continuous cloudy and rainy days, especially in winter, and cannot open the windows for ventilation, overly wet potting soil will cause its roots to rot. That is, the roots get suffocated. That kind of tall gallon pot, which has only become popular in recent years, is what we call a lazy person's pot. It holds water well, and one watering can last many days, so it is not suitable for indoor use.
When choosing a pot in the early stage, the plant must not be given too large a pot. A newly bought plant goes through a process of root development, especially for beginners. If you choose a taller pot and the soil mix is not so loose and breathable, one watering may not dry out for half a month or even a month, which is very bad for the plant's roots. A short pot is less likely to have this problem. In the early stage, if you choose a 20 cm pot, and if the plant grows luxuriantly and its crown can grow very large, then generally repot it once a year. For annual repotting, move from 20 cm to 30 cm, then to 40 cm, and continue cycling in this way, until your plant is large enough that you cannot move it to a larger pot anymore. After that, we can solve the problem of poor nutrients in the original soil by changing the soil, or by fertilizing it.
Do not be too lazy when growing woody flowers, because they grow quickly. They need relatively more nutrients, and each repotting adds new nutrition for them. New potting soil will not have bacteria, is nutritionally sufficient, and will not become severely compacted, which is very good for its growth the following year. You cannot be too lazy when growing flowers. Repotting every one to two years is a must. Because as the plant grows, its roots will fill the entire pot. Once filled, we then trim them and change to a larger pot, so it has enough space to grow. If you give it a large pot in the early stage, and a beginner's soil mix is not so strict, and drainage is slightly poor, then if the soil does not dry for a long time after watering, it is easy to suffocate its roots to death. Even if it does not die, it will grow poorly. Plant growth happens on the premise that the roots breathe well, so this point must be noted.
When choosing a pot for a woody plant, the suitable one is the best. According to the plant's growth condition, repot it once a year or every two years, and proceed step by step. That is the best approach. Being lazy and giving it a large pot all at once so it does not need repotting for many years is not advisable.
Xiao Qi has said so much, and my organizing ability is a bit poor. I do not know if you can understand it. I hope it can help you.
