As the temperature gradually rises, growing flowers not only cultivates body and mind and purifies the air, but in summer it can also give you a fresh and comfortable feeling. For example, growing a pot of this geranium that can survive as soon as it touches soil. Young geranium plants are succulent herbs, while old plants are semi-woody; in the West it is a very good flower for decorating windowsills, and on the European continent, such as in Germany and Austria, it is especially common.

When caring for potted flowers in summer, you definitely must not miss choosing geraniums, because they are not only easy to grow and beautiful in appearance, but also relatively easy to grow into a full pot. Gardeners who grow them well can train geraniums into big flower balls, and when grown really well, every pot grows into a big flower ball. People who do not know better might think they were transformed from "flower spirits."

The growing environment geraniums like is warm, humid and sunny. During their growing period they need sufficient sunlight. If the light is insufficient, their stems and leaves grow leggy, the flower stalks are thin and soft, and the inflorescences develop poorly; flower buds under weak light often do not open smoothly and wither early. So while ensuring sufficient light, turn the pot once a week to make the leaf surface receive light evenly.

As the temperature gradually rises, geraniums grow faster and faster and bloom more. At this time we must pay attention and must repot and prune the geraniums. Generally, repot once a year, and the best time to repot is from late August to early September. Before repotting, cut off remnant branches, old branches and diseased or pest-damaged branches. Leave 3-5 main branches, with 3 bud points per branch.

Then comes fertilizing the geraniums. Spring and autumn are the vigorous growth periods for geraniums. To meet the growth needs of geraniums, apply liquid fertilizer once every 7-10 days during the growing period. Before flower buds appear, mainly use nitrogen fertilizer; after flower buds appear, mainly use phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, with a concentration of 0.1%-0.2% being suitable. During the high-temperature period in summer, the plant is in a semi-dormant state and fertilization should be stopped. Because its stems and leaves have fine hairs, rinse immediately with clean water after fertilizing.

Although sufficient nutrients can promote geranium flowering, geraniums do not like heavy fertilizer, so fertilizing should be moderate. Too much fertilizer will make geraniums grow too vigorously, which is unfavorable for flowering. Of course, watering also needs attention. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting dry between waterings. If the potting soil is too wet, roots rot easily; if the potting soil is too dry, leaves tend to turn yellow. In summer, spray water frequently to lower the temperature and keep the potting soil moist. Also pay attention to ventilation and light transmission. Geraniums have strong drought tolerance and will not dry to death if not watered for several days, but old leaves will turn yellow and fall off.

So if you want geraniums to instantly turn into big flower balls, you need to do these three things well: watering, fertilizing and light!
