I've found that many friends can't figure out the difference between yellow zhulan and white zhulan. Let me explain here. Yellow zhulan and white zhulan belong to the same family, but they are different species, just like the difference between Black people and White people. Yellow zhulan:

The leaves are small, the stems are thin, and the flowering period is from May to August. The flowers are only large, and the yield is high. Because yellow zhulan stems are very thin, we can usually plant 100 flower seedlings in one large pot like this one (70 cm in diameter), but because yellow zhulan stems are thin, once the plant grows long it cannot support itself and will trail down. Therefore, it needs a trellis every year, and every seedling must be hung on the trellis with palm fiber.

So growing yellow zhulan is very labor-intensive, but yellow zhulan has a high yield, so most of what we grow is yellow zhulan, used for scenting tea leaves. White zhulan: white zhulan has large leaves, thick stems, blooms all year round, has small flowers, and low yield. Because white zhulan stems are thick, it can support its own branches and stems, so it does not need flower hanging. It is very easy to grow.

Many friends ask whether white zhulan flowers are more fragrant than yellow ones. Personally, I think they are about the same. For those of you growing potted plants indoors, white zhulan is an excellent indoor potted plant.
