One industry that supports a city

Through a thousand years, enduring without decline.

The secret of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital for a millennium

As everyone knows, Jingdezhen is the world-renowned porcelain capital, and the English name of China, "China," means porcelain. This small town is beautiful, mysterious, steeped in history and enormously influential. This is the birthplace of ceramic culture, the place that brings together the finest kilns under heaven; so many peerless masterpieces have flowed from here that Emperor Zhenzong of the Northern Song dynasty bestowed upon it the name "Jingde."

Porcelain originates from porcelain clay, is fused through water and fire, shaped by human hands, and perfected by the will of heaven. CCTV's "Handmade China" and "Tiangong Kaiwu: A Journey of Learning Traditional Craftsmanship" have specially documented and passed on Jingdezhen porcelain in documentary form, and Teacher Wang Gang, Teacher Zhao Zhongxiang, Li Bingbing and others all hold porcelain in the highest regard.

Jingdezhen porcelain is famous throughout the world, and its tea sets in particular have earned widespread praise for their delicate and exquisite craftsmanship. Yet precisely because of this fame, many unscrupulous dealers add markup at every layer - which is exactly why many collectors pay a high price only to get porcelain of ordinary quality. Add to that the many counterfeits on the market, so how do you tell machine-pressed porcelain from fake porcelain, and buy genuine Jingdezhen porcelain?

The "madman" who vows to cut porcelain prices by 40%

I am Yanzi of Dayu Porcelain, born in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital. Growing up surrounded by my parents' influence, I was deeply immersed in porcelain culture, and ever since I was old enough to understand things, I have been a devoted lover and promoter of Jingdezhen porcelain.

With the full support of my family, I founded the Dayu Porcelain brand. I have traveled to every traditional handmade porcelain workshop in Jingdezhen, all to find the finest and most affordable Jingdezhen porcelain. Behind the high prices of porcelain, I follow my father's instruction and vow to be the "madman" who brings porcelain prices down.

Dayu Porcelain's traditional porcelain-making craftsmanship

1

Mining - clay preparation

(Gaoling Village, Jingdezhen)

All Dayu Porcelain pieces come from the premium kaolin clay of Gaoling Village. We strictly select every piece of raw ore, break it by hand with iron hammers, then pound it into powder using water-powered trip-hammers, wash it to remove impurities, and after settling, form it into brick-shaped clay blocks.

Then the clay blocks are mixed with water, impurities removed, and kneaded by hand or trodden underfoot to squeeze the air out of the clay mass and make the moisture content even throughout.

Yanzi can tell you for certain: you may find the same shapes elsewhere, but the prepared porcelain clay is definitely not as good as ours.

2

Traditional forming craftsmanship

Dayu Porcelain uses the "traditional fully hand-thrown method," following the Ming dynasty "Tiangong Kaiwu" record that Jingdezhen porcelain-making requires the effort of a single piece through 72 processes before it can become a finished vessel. What looks like an ordinary motion requires a master decades of practice to achieve.

Many of Dayu Porcelain's veteran artisans began learning ceramic-making from a young age and have devoted their entire lives to mastering a single process. With the virtue of reverently carrying on the craft and pursuing the pinnacle of artisanship, they pursue and pass on the perfection of traditional craftsmanship.

3

Wood firing

The wood-firing process gives the fired porcelain a subtle, moist glaze surface. It is the final key process in making porcelain. Using one full day and night (24 hours), the unfired bodies inside the saggars are fired into porcelain bodies.

The temperature at the front of the kiln is higher, the back lower, and the middle most moderate, so porcelain fired in the same kiln varies greatly in quality, and the yield rate is low. It is precisely for this reason that during the kiln transformation process, every piece becomes a peerless, one-of-a-kind work.
