In May, hydrangeas should be taking the stage; this is the season when hydrangeas bloom in full. Flowers of all kinds of colors look especially gorgeous against the blue sky and white clouds. Although hydrangeas have rich colors, many gardening friends have hydrangeas at home that are rather single in color. We all know that hydrangeas can bloom in different colors, red or blue, depending on the acidity and alkalinity of the soil, but how exactly do you adjust the color?
It is extremely common for hydrangeas to bloom red, and a vivid red patch in a roadside green belt also looks quite nice. When the soil is on the alkaline side, hydrangeas will bloom red. For example, in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region, if hydrangeas are planted in the ground without applying acidic fertilizer, they will bloom red, because the soil is alkaline or neutral.
Method one for turning blue: during the first 6 weeks of forcing cultivation, apply an aluminum sulfate solution of 3 grams diluted in 1 liter of water 3-4 times; the solution treatment has good and even absorption. Method two for turning blue: aluminum sulfate, white vinegar, ferrous sulfate, and potassium fertilizer are all commonly used acidic fertilizers for adjusting soil acidity and alkalinity.
Some gardening friends say that for color adjustment, you only need to water with ferrous sulfate, or just add aluminum sulfate, but many gardening friends also fail. This is mainly because the growing media everyone uses are different. For example, some people grow plants in the ground, where the medium itself contains more aluminum, so adding ferrous sulfate to acidify is enough, while some people's medium contains little aluminum, so no matter how acidic you make it, it is useless, and it is also easy to overdo it and burn the seedlings. Therefore, color adjustment still has to depend on the medium.
