What to Do When Flowers and Plants Get Pests? Homemade Insecticides Are Convenient and Effective
When growing plants at home, pests always show up, and their forms are incredibly varied, so they are truly annoying. So how should you get rid of these common potted plant pests below?
Aphids
Aphids are a pest we often find on flowers. They always hide on the underside of leaves, and because their color is the same as the leaves, they fool our eyes, so you should usually pay attention to checking the underside of leaves.
When aphids are found, you can take the measure of washing them off with water; of course, this is when there are not many aphids. If there are too many aphids, you can mix liquid soap and water together, but it must not be too concentrated. After spraying it on the leaves, wait about five minutes, and also remember to rinse it off with clean water. In especially severe cases, remember to spray pesticide on it.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs also have a great destructive ability toward plants. If the plants at home are infested by mealybugs, leaf drop will occur. Pay attention to checking whether there are mealybugs clumped together like cotton on the plant.
If there are few mealybugs, you can wash them off with a strong stream of water, but if there are many, use a specialized pesticide to spray and kill them.
Red spider mites
The destructive ability of red spider mites can be said to be very great, because they feed themselves by sucking plant sap, so when red spider mite infestation occurs, the leaves will turn yellow, and some small brown spots will also appear.
Because red spider mites do not like to live in low-temperature and humid environments, after red spider mites appear, rinse the plant with warm water once a week, and usually spray water to keep it moist. After a period of time, the red spider mites will decrease.
You can also buy some medications for removing mites, because red spider mites themselves also belong to the mites, so spraying them to kill them is enough.
Scale insects
Scale insects are a pest that is especially difficult to eliminate, and their outer shells are also especially hard. On plants infested by scale insects, the leaves of the entire plant will become wilted and then begin to drop.
Vinegar has a certain effect on eliminating scale insects. Dip a cotton swab in vinegar and apply it to the places where scale insects have appeared, and the scale insects will soon be eliminated.
Fungus gnats
Fungus gnats are one of the most common insects, but they do not pose much of a threat to plant growth. Many fungus gnats appear in humid environments, so you should often keep the potting soil appropriately dry, or you can put some diatomaceous earth or sand on the surface of the potting soil.
