The moment anyone mentions succulents, the first word that pops into everybody's head is "adorable." But in reality, besides all those cute little fleshy plants, the succulent family also includes some varieties with rather low aesthetic appeal, commonly known as ugly succulents! Today, Huahua is here to round up those eye-searingly ugly succulents. What are they?

Pachypodium brevicaule (Ebisu's Smile)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

The first one Huahua has to complain about is Pachypodium brevicaule. When it is not in bloom, Pachypodium brevicaule looks exactly like a piece of ginger covered in thorns. This level of beauty is truly hard to compliment!

Even when it produces its little yellow flowers, its appearance only improves by a tiny bit! The key issue is that it is just too expensive. A small piece sells for 3000, and a poor person like Huahua can only look at it from afar!

Echeveria 'Baron Bold' (Wild Baron)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

The moment Huahua lays eyes on Echeveria 'Baron Bold', she gets goosebumps all over. Forgive Huahua, she truly cannot appreciate its beauty.

But some gardening friends tell Huahua that they like Echeveria 'Baron Bold' precisely because it has a kind of evil beauty!

Echeveria 'Maiden's Dream' (Maiden's Dream)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

Speaking of the lumpy ones, the one that stands alongside Echeveria 'Baron Bold' is Echeveria 'Maiden's Dream'! The lumps on Echeveria 'Maiden's Dream' look like caterpillars lying on the leaves. If it were up to Huahua, she would definitely want to dig all those lumps out!

But for gardening friends who love it, it seems the bigger the lumps, the better it proves you have raised it?

Huernia verekeri (Red Fury)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

The moment Huahua sees the appearance of Huernia verekeri, she thinks of the little monsters in movies. Not only does it have lumps growing on its leaves, but the edges also have white fuzz. It really looks bizarre and misshapen!

Why is it called that? Huahua wonders, could it be because the white fuzz spreads out, giving a feeling of hair standing on end in a fury?

Senecio pendulus (Loach Plant)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

For some reason, whenever Huahua thinks of the slippery, slimy look of a loach, she gets a particularly uncomfortable feeling in her heart. When she sees Senecio pendulus, that uncomfortable feeling gets even stronger...

Look at this bristling, clawing appearance. Huahua feels like all the goosebumps on her body are about to drop to the ground!

If it grows any longer, it turns into the look of a green snake. That is truly scary enough in the middle of the night!

Dinteranthus (Butterfly Medal)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

The first time Huahua heard the name Dinteranthus, she was absolutely filled with anticipation. Such a beautiful name must belong to an extremely good-looking succulent, right? And then...

Can anyone tell Huahua what on earth this thing is? How does it look like a butterfly? How does it look like a medal? It is just hideously ugly!

Cristate Mammillaria elongata 'Golden Fingers' (Golden Fingers Cristata)

GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA

Huahua used to think all cristate succulents were good-looking, until she saw the cristate form of Mammillaria elongata 'Golden Fingers', and only then did she realize she had been living in vain all these years!

After Mammillaria elongata 'Golden Fingers' becomes cristate, does it not look exactly like it is covered in bugs? It feels like her trypophobia is about to act up!

That is all Huahua has to share for today!

What other rather ugly succulents have you gardening friends seen?

Hurry up and tell Huahua in the comments!
