Just as a child needs a bigger bed and larger clothes as they grow up, if a plant is never repotted and is left to grow on its own, its root growth will be restricted, affecting the plant's development. In addition, the soil in the pot becomes increasingly lacking in nutrients and declining in quality as the plant grows, so repotting the plant at the right time can give it new vitality.

1. What season is suitable for repotting

The time for repotting and changing the soil varies from flower to flower, and is generally chosen between

Jingzhe and Qingming

the two solar terms. At this time, potted flowers have just begun to sprout and grow, but have not yet entered the peak growing season, making it the best time for repotting and changing the soil. If it is too early, the potted flowers have not yet sprouted, and root rot is likely to occur; if it is too late, the flowers have already entered the vigorous growing season, and repotting and changing the soil can easily damage the roots and also affect growth.

From the perspective of the seasons, there are two best periods each year for changing the soil:

Spring: March, April, May; autumn: September, October, November.

Some plants can also have their soil changed in winter, that is, in December and January and February. (In the south, where temperatures are higher, spring repotting can be done in late February to early March; in the north, where temperatures are lower, it can be done from mid-March to mid-April)

In any case, you must not choose summer for repotting, especially changing the soil in midsummer

. Changing the soil in midsummer does more harm than good; the key reason is the high temperature, while in other seasons, such a problem does not exist.

The periods when you absolutely should not change its soil are the seedling recovery period, the vigorous growth period, the flower bud period, the flowering period and the fruiting period.

For plants:

The most suitable periods for changing the soil are the dormant period and the early growth period.

For changing the soil, besides looking at the season, you also need to look at the condition of the plant itself. Different plants have different suitable times for changing the soil. Perennial-rooted and deciduous flowers can be repotted and have their soil changed after leaf drop and before germination in early spring; evergreen flowers such as clivia (Clivia miniata), camellia (Camellia japonica) and orchids should be repotted after temperatures rise, and not too early, otherwise root rot easily occurs.

2. In what condition should a plant be repotted?

1. Observe the plant's roots

If you find that the plant's leaves are growing smaller and smaller in size, becoming thinner and thinner in thickness and fading in color, just like a person who is sallow and emaciated, it means the soil does not have enough nutrients and the plant needs repotting to replenish the soil.
