The wrong repotting method easily causes root rot and leaf drop - repot one plant and it dies, repot another and it dies too
When to repot
The best time to repot is during the plant's dormant period or growing period. Repotting at these times causes the least damage to potted plants, and they recover quickly. If your plant is about to die, then don't worry about the timing of repotting!
Most potted plants can be repotted in spring or autumn, as long as the temperature is 15-20°C.
Note: plants must not be repotted during their growing period, seedling recovery period, or flowering period!
Steps for repotting
1. Removing the plant from the pot:
Before removing the plant from the pot, first control the watering. Do not water for 3-5 days before removing it from the pot; it comes out easily when the potting soil is half dry.
Note that the roots must be kept with soil. You can prune the roots appropriately and remove some of the old potting soil, but the soil in the middle of the roots must not be disturbed!
2. Pruning the roots
Use scissors to cut off rotten roots and old roots; if there are withered leaves, cut those off as well.
Apply carbendazim powder to the cut areas to sterilize and disinfect them.
3. Preparing new potting soil
1. If the plant being repotted has already reached its mature form, you can repot it in a flowerpot of the same size. If the plant being repotted is still growing, move it to a flowerpot one size larger.
2. Prepare new soil; you can mix it yourself or buy it directly. If you want to use old soil, be sure to dry it in the sun first to sterilize and disinfect it.
3. Before adding soil, it is best to place some broken tiles or clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to increase soil aeration, and add a small amount of base fertilizer, such as sterilized chicken manure or cake fertilizer, to increase soil fertility.
4. Putting it into the new pot
Hold the plant upright and place it into the new pot, sprinkling in new soil while gently shaking the plant.
After the new soil is added, water once to settle the roots, that is, water thoroughly until water flows out from the bottom of the pot.
Things to note after repotting
After repotting, first place the plant in a cool, shaded spot for a period of care. After about 1 week, move it to a bright, well-ventilated spot and care for it normally.
Do not fertilize within 3 months after repotting.
Clivia (Clivia miniata) and orchids are usually repotted once every 2-3 years, while plants with fast-growing roots like spider plants are best repotted once a year.
