The current temperature is perfect for growing flowers and vegetables. Plant a few pots of green vegetables on your balcony, pick some whenever you want to eat them, and enjoy them like flowers the rest of the time. Watching your own vegetables change a little every day feels wonderful. What vegetables are suitable for growing on a balcony in May?

Many of the vegetables that are well suited to balcony growing are ones we eat all the time, such as the most common baby bok choy, napa cabbage and lettuce. These sprout quickly after sowing and produce seedlings within a week. As long as you fertilize and give them plenty of sun, you can pick them to eat in about 30 days.

But now that summer is here and the weather will get hotter and hotter, you can update your balcony vegetable varieties according to your own preferences. If you like cool-weather lettuce and baby bok choy, you can switch to these instead: water spinach and sweet potato leaves.

1. Water spinach is nicknamed the most common national vegetable of summer; in some places it is called rattan vegetable. You can boil it in soup, stir-fry it at home, or stir-fry the stems with aged vinegar, which gives a crunchy bite that is especially delicious.

Now is a good time to plant water spinach. You can buy seeds from the market and sow them. From sowing to sprouting to growing long stems takes about a month. The advantage of buying seeds is that there are many varieties to choose from.

The easier method is to buy it from the market and plant it as cuttings. How to do it: cut the stems into small 15cm sections, choose 2-3 plants and insert them into the soil together, leaving 2-3 nodes above the soil surface. Water every day, and once they have grown enough you can pick them to eat.

When picking, leave one node that can sprout. Water spinach grows fairly fast, so water it more. Apply organic liquid fertilizer about once every 7 days and the vegetables will grow especially tender. It must be organic fertilizer, and the taste is especially good. You can harvest about once every 10 days.

2. Sweet potato leaves are also a vegetable we eat often, but the sweet potato leaves bought in the market taste bland, unlike the ones grown at home in the countryside, which have a slight sweetness when chewed. How to grow them: buy a few large clay pots, buy some potting soil, then go to the market and buy a few sweet potatoes. First sprout the sweet potatoes, then plant them. Sprouting method: take a few paper napkins, spray them wet, wrap them around half of a sweet potato, put it in a plastic bag, tie the opening halfway, and toss it in a dark corner of the kitchen. It will basically sprout within a week.

Next, bury the sprouted sweet potato in the soil with the sprouts sticking out a little, water it, and before long it will send up lots of sweet potato shoots. Let them grow freely, and simply pick them when you want to eat them.
