Today we are doing bougainvillea cuttings. Because many friends find it hard to get bougainvillea cuttings to survive, let us walk through the actual process.
For bougainvillea branches, it is best to choose one-year-old branches; if they are too tender, they are not easy to keep alive. When taking cuttings, keep two or three nodes; one leaf is one node. Cut the bottom end into a slant, and keep one leaf or two half-leaves so they can carry out photosynthesis.
About 1 cm from the bottom end, use a small knife to score a ring around it. This way, roots will emerge from below and from this scored area, so rooting will be much faster.
After cutting, soak it in naphthalene acetic acid. Naphthalene acetic acid is a plant growth regulator, that is, a hormone, and it promotes root growth. This naphthalene acetic acid is not easily soluble in water, so you can dissolve it with hot water or alcohol, let it cool, and then use it. After dissolving it with hot water, pour off the crystals at the bottom, and use the dissolved water to soak the cuttings for 15 minutes.
For the cutting soil, I mixed perlite, vermiculite, and peat soil at a ratio of 1:1:1. Just insert the bougainvillea directly into it, then cover it with a plastic bag and place it in a spot with plenty of bright, indirect light. It must get light; without light, it is not easy to keep alive.
Bougainvillea cuttings can sprout in about 30 days, and in about 45 days they sometimes root, and then they will bloom. It is best to repot after the flowers finish blooming, moving them into nutrient-rich potting soil. The trick for cuttings is to soak them in naphthalene acetic acid; this way the survival rate can reach more than 90%.
These small cutting seedlings bloomed in just over a month. Do you want to have them too? Come and try it.
