In South Africa, the king protea is even honored as the national flower. The king protea is one of the most widely distributed members of the Protea family, capable of growing from sea level up to mountains 1500 m high. Different climatic conditions and geographical environments lead to great variation in the king protea's leaves, flower shape, flower color and flowering time, and even under identical growing conditions, the king protea retains these characteristics in commercial cultivation. This allows the king protea, when grown as a cut flower, to meet markets around the world with different seasonal demands for the flower. This South African Protea flower is widely cultivated in New Zealand and has been successfully grown as a garden plant under the Mediterranean climate conditions of Europe and in suitable soil types in the Americas, Australia and Hawaii.
