Reasons for Yellowing Leaves on Bougainvillea and How to Fix Them
1. Adjust the watering method
(1) Specific cause: Neither too much nor too little water is acceptable. In short, unscientific watering methods easily cause yellowing leaves.
(2) Solution: Adjust the watering method. In spring and autumn, water once a day; in summer, water twice a day, in the morning and evening; during winter dormancy, control watering and keep the soil only slightly moist.
2. Increase light exposure time
(1) Specific cause: Bougainvillea is a sun-loving plant. If the light is too weak, the leaves easily turn yellow and the growth is weak.
(2) Solution: Except when it has just been transplanted and is placed in partial shade, it is best to give it plenty of sunlight at other times. In winter, at least eight hours; however, in summer, shade is needed when the sun is too strong.
3. Replace the soil
(1) Specific cause: The soil drainage is too poor, and water accumulates without draining away, which easily causes yellowing leaves.
(2) Solution: Switch to soil with good drainage. For example, leaf mold, garden soil and sand can be mixed in a ratio of 4:4:2.
4. Pause fertilization
(1) Specific cause: Too much fertilizer or the application of raw manure will cause fertilizer burn and make the leaves yellow.
(2) Solution: Pause fertilization for a period of time first. Do not use raw manure or concentrated fertilizer, and do not apply too much at one time.
5. Spray carbendazim
(1) Specific cause: "Leaf spot disease" easily affects the plant and makes the leaves yellow.
(2) Solution: Directly cut off the branches with the most severe disease. Then spray carbendazim once every seven to ten days, three or four times in total. If the condition is very severe, the interval can be adjusted to four days.
