Master Lecture"Poul Holm: Global food demand to increase 60% by 2050, sustainable seafood plays a key role
Poul Holm, President of the World Humanities Alliance and Professor of Environmental History at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, was specially invited to Taiwan, China to give a keynote speech at the "Asia-Pacific Symposium on Agriculture, Food and Food Ethics" (APSafe), exploring the possibilities for sustainable development of marine food. Poul Holm focuses his research on the history of fisheries, marine environmental history, coastal communities and culture, and in 2017 convened a group of experts from the "Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA)" to complete the "Food from the Oceans" research report, which serves as a reference for European ocean policy.
Poul Holm stated that as a link in the food chain, humans must not only make efforts on the production side, but consumers must also learn to "choose smartly"; from the choice of fish species to consume, to actively caring about the transparency of seafood footprints, "consumer awareness" is an indispensable key. Holm approached this from the perspective of "food ethics," believing that everything returns to personal choice: "It just depends on whether you start from thinking of yourself as 'master of nature' or 'a part of nature.'" He emphasized that the final decision is absolutely not a matter of right or wrong, but "the ocean literacy in your heart will help you make smart choices."
