The single-trunk double-stem style bonsai is made by planting a single trunk with two stems, or two trees of the same species, in one pot, as if a mother and child are embracing, reluctant to part. When planting, the forms of the two stems should be rich in variation, often one large and one small, one tall and one short, one leaning down and one tilting up, so that the shape appears graceful. It is important to avoid two trunks of the same thickness, equal height, and similar form. If two young trees are planted in one pot, once they grow to a certain height they should be pinched back to encourage branching, so that the branches of the two trees are well matched, with varying lengths and appropriate density, as if they had grown naturally.
