The flower I'm going to talk about today is very famous, almost everyone has heard of it, but perhaps you haven't seen what it looks like. It is the night-blooming jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum), which often blooms at night, has a rich floral fragrance and a mosquito-repelling effect; its flowers can be steamed to make fragrant oil, and its leaves can be used medicinally, with effects of clearing the liver, improving eyesight and removing eye opacities.

The night-blooming jasmine has slender branches and blooms in summer and autumn; its yellow-green flowers open in the evening, giving off waves of strong, pungent fragrance. In the south it is mostly used to decorate courtyards, areas by windows, pond edges and pavilion sides. The night-blooming jasmine always opens at night, releasing a strong scent when it blooms, and summer mosquitoes happen to hate this smell, which is how it achieves its mosquito-repelling effect.

Generally, the flowering period of the night-blooming jasmine is from May to October. The reason the span is so wide is that it is affected by variety, temperature, humidity, soil and the climate of the north and south, thus showing different seasons; in the north the peak flowering season is in late June, while in the south it is mostly in August to September.

The night-blooming jasmine has strong adaptability to the environment, vigorous vitality and a well-developed root system. It mainly grows in well-drained, fertile soil. Gardeners who are tempted can try growing one.
