How to Grow and Care for Potted Zamioculcas zamiifolia (Money Tree) and Key Points to Note

The money tree (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is an evergreen herbaceous plant with leaves arranged like strings of copper coins, very exquisite and unique. It also has considerable ornamental value because of its beautiful appearance, so many plant lovers like to grow it as a potted plant for enjoyment. So how do you grow a money tree? What points should you note? Below, the editor will share with you the growing methods and key points for potted money trees.
The money tree likes to receive plenty of light, and it also likes a warm, dry growing environment. Its drought tolerance is fairly strong, but it is rather afraid of cold, damp conditions. If light is insufficient, although the plant can still grow, its leaves will become sparse and the whole plant shape will appear rather loose and not compact, so to a certain extent this reduces its ornamental value.
I. Potting Soil
To grow a money tree, make sure the potting soil is loose and breathable, with strong water permeability, and not prone to compaction. The potting soil can be mixed and used in a certain ratio of coarse sand, peat soil, coal cinders and garden soil. But since the money tree is an acid-loving plant, the potting soil should also preferably be slightly acidic. The money tree itself is fairly drought-tolerant and does not have high requirements for potting soil; usually the main task is simply to improve permeability.
II. Light
The money tree likes light, but it is also tolerant of partial shade. In summer, avoid scorching sun exposure and strong direct light, so as not to burn the plant's leaves and affect its growth and ornamental appeal. In late spring and early autumn, combine shading with light exposure to avoid poor growth. In winter, promptly move the potted plant indoors for care to protect it from the cold and keep it warm, while providing as much light as possible.
III. Temperature
The money tree likes to grow in a warm environment, with the most suitable growing temperature between 20°C-32°C, so during the high temperatures of midsummer, promptly shade it, ventilate it and spray water to speed up cooling and ensure the plant can grow smoothly. The money tree has poor cold tolerance, so when temperatures drop in late autumn and early winter, promptly move it indoors to keep it warm and protect it from the cold, ensuring it can overwinter safely and smoothly.
IV. Water
The money tree has poor tolerance to water and is relatively drought-tolerant, so normally keep the potting soil slightly moist; in summer and winter, control water promptly and keep the potting soil on the drier side. Especially in midsummer, when the temperature reaches 30°C, replenish water promptly to maintain moisture, generally by spraying water, which both maintains moisture and helps lower the temperature. In winter, the air is often relatively dry, so while controlling water, also spray water appropriately to maintain moisture.
V. Fertilizing
In spring and autumn, the temperature generally stays between 20°C-30°C, which is relatively suitable for the money tree's growth, so this stage is the money tree's growing season. Since the plant needs to maintain good growth, it needs timely nutrient supplementation, so during the growing season you can apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once a month; if yellowing leaves occur during this period, you can add an appropriate amount of ferrous sulfate when topdressing.
VI. Repotting
Most potted flowering plants need regular repotting after being grown for a long time, generally once every 1-2 years. The same is true for the money tree, especially when water and fertilizer are difficult to penetrate into the soil after watering and fertilizing, or when a large amount of water accumulates in the pot causes severe root rot, repotting should be done promptly. After repotting, the plant not only has more ample space to stretch freely, but also more sufficient nutrients to promote growth.
In addition to the above care and management methods, there are also the following key points to note when growing a potted money tree:
1. Light is very important for promoting the normal growth of the money tree. Besides shading it appropriately in summer to avoid scorching sun exposure, you should also provide sufficient light. Although the plant can still grow in an environment with no light or insufficient light, its growth state will not be good, so light should be sufficient and adequate, and the intensity should be appropriate.
2. When temperatures rise in summer, promptly strengthen ventilation and spray water appropriately to lower the temperature. At the same time, avoid hot, humid and unventilated conditions, otherwise it is easy to cause root rot in the plant and affect normal growth.
3. Once you find that the soil in the pot is too wet or has severe water accumulation and cannot drain successfully in a short time, repot and change the soil promptly; otherwise, the plant may develop yellowing leaves, wilting and leaf drop, and in severe cases may even die.
