The Mammillaria heyderi plant body is solitary, spherical to oval, 6-8 cm in diameter, 10-12 cm tall, and dark green in color.
In spring and summer it bears terminal purplish-red bell-shaped flowers, 3-3.5 cm in diameter.
It has 13-15 rounded, wart-like shallow ribs. There are 8-10 radiating radial spines; no central spines; new spines are yellowish-brown, old spines are grayish-brown.
Plants of this genus all prefer a growing environment with plenty of sunlight, but during periods of high summer heat and high temperatures they should be shaded appropriately, and during the growing season they need relatively high air humidity.
It can be grown as a small potted ornamental plant.
