A detailed guide to sowing tree peony seeds: the key steps from sowing to seedling emergence

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
To sow tree peony seeds, choose a slightly larger container with good drainage, then collect its seeds in early August and soak them in warm water to break dormancy. After that, scatter the seeds into soil mixed with organic fertilizer, and cover with a layer of plastic film.

1. Choosing a container

It may grow fairly tall, reaching about 2 m. So we need to choose a larger container, though it does not need to be very large from the start, because repotting and similar handling may still be done during care. Another thing to note is the drainage of the pot; you cannot use a flower pot with particularly poor drainage.

2. Seed collection and treatment

The time to collect seeds is generally in early August. After collecting them, store them indoors in a relatively cool place; they must not be placed in sunlight, otherwise the seeds will not germinate easily. Before sowing, to break their dormancy, soak them in warm water at about 50°C.

3. Choosing the time

The interval between collection and sowing should not be too long; sow immediately after collecting and treating the seeds, and at the latest it must be done before October arrives.

4. Sowing

First disinfect the prepared soil and mix in some base fertilizer, so the seed survival rate will be somewhat higher. After treating the soil, put it into the container, then scatter in the seeds.

5. Later management

First, to prevent excessive evaporation of soil moisture and also to block overly strong sunlight, we can cover with some plastic film. In addition, do not water too much, otherwise the soil will become compacted. If sowing is done relatively late, that is, if the temperature is quite low, appropriate cold protection measures must also be taken, such as covering with some straw, leaves, and so on.
