How to grow petunias as potted plants at home? Master these key points

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
In autumn, winter and spring, it is best to place them on a sunny balcony; in summer, take care to shade them to prevent scorching. During the flowering period, provide water, fertilizer and light, and after the flowers fade, remove them. Petunias are not tolerant of high temperatures; when it is hot, mist them to cool them down, and in daily care, pay attention to pruning.

1. Position

In spring, autumn and winter, it is best not to place them on a balcony facing north, because the light there is relatively weak, and if placed on the north side there is even less light. In summer, they need to be placed on the east and north sides, because summer temperatures are especially high and they need shading.

2. Overwintering

There is one point to note when overwintering them at home: they can only overwinter at temperatures above zero degrees. We had best place them on an enclosed balcony with light, so that wind and rain will not affect them. In addition, we should keep the potting soil moist and also give them plenty of light. Of course, if the balcony temperature is especially high, their flowering period will also come earlier.

3. Flowering period

If we want their flowering period to arrive, there is first one requirement: the temperature must be suitable. Only at a suitable temperature will they bloom. When they bloom, we need to pay attention to water and fertilizer, and also give them plenty of light. If the flowers fade, remove them. Removing the flowers has another benefit: the leaves below will grow new branches and bloom again, and the flowering period will be extended. During the flowering period, do not apply too much fertilizer, especially nitrogen fertilizer; if too much is applied, it can easily cause the plants to grow too tall and then fall over.

4. Pruning

Pruning is necessary, especially when grown at home. In May and October, the flowers will bloom continuously and the vines will grow especially long. At this time, we can cut back the stems, then apply additional fertilizer and keep the potting soil moist. Before long, new branches and new flowers will appear on the stems. Of course, if we are cultivating them for hanging basket display, then we do not need to prune.

5. Shading

Next year the temperature will be especially high, so we need to cool them down and also shade them. It is best to sprinkle some water on the surrounding ground and also give them some ventilation. Note that you must not water them too much, otherwise it will cause their roots to rot. We should note that they are not tolerant of high temperatures; if the temperature stays above thirty degrees, they will wither and die physiologically.
