What is the difference between snapdragon and stock? A quick guide to tell them apart

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
One very obvious difference between snapdragon and stock is that the entire stock plant is covered in dense, soft grey short hairs, while snapdragon is not. In addition, snapdragon blooms one month earlier than stock.

1. Flower differences

Snapdragon: under normal conditions its flowering period is from March to June, the petals are about 3 cm to 15 cm long, and the flower stalks are about 5 mm to 7 mm long;

Stock: its flowering period is from April to May, which is one month later than snapdragon, the petals are about 12 mm long, and the flower stalks are about 1.5 mm long. This is a huge difference from snapdragon flowers, as they are much smaller than those of snapdragon. So if both are in bloom, it is very easy to tell these two plants apart.

2. Stem differences

Snapdragon: its branches are generally at the junction of the stem and the root, and the base of the stem sometimes becomes woody;

Stock: its branches are spread throughout the whole plant, unlike snapdragon, and the base of all the branches becomes woody.

3. Height differences

Snapdragon can grow up to 80 cm tall, while stock only grows up to 60 cm tall.

4. Leaf differences

Snapdragon: its leaves are 2 cm to 6 cm long, with smooth edges, and most of the leaves are lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate;

Stock: its leaves, including the petiole, are about 6 cm to 14 cm long in total, and the leaves are 1.2 cm to 2.5 cm wide, much larger than those of snapdragon, and its leaves are spoon-shaped or oblong to oblanceolate, which is very different from snapdragon; their edges are either smooth or slightly wavy, unlike snapdragon leaves, whose edges are all smooth.
