What to do if your Radermachera sinica (China doll) has been frosted? Master these remedy methods
1. Spray foliar fertilizer
The foliar fertilizer spray method is suitable when the frost damage is not too severe: in winter, when leaves curl and turn yellow due to wind, cold dew, or morning frost, you can mix a specialized antifreeze agent with an appropriate amount of urea and spray it on the leaf surfaces. For the fertilizer concentration and spraying frequency, refer to the fertilizer instructions; when in doubt, keep the concentration dilute rather than strong.
After mild frost damage, drastic pruning may cause secondary damage, so simply wait until new buds sprout the following spring before pruning.
2. Preserve the roots
When sudden low temperatures in winter, or continuous frost, cause the leaves to become severely dehydrated and unable to recover quickly, you must protect its root system. First, water heavily and loosen the soil, but there must be no waterlogging in the pot. If it is planted outdoors, cover the top layer of soil with rice straw, the thicker the better.
Afterward, cut off all withered branches and leaves; if the main trunk also shows signs of dehydration, cut it back as well. Finally, ensure the roots are supplied with water so they are no longer in a dehydrated state. By the following spring, new buds will gradually emerge.
3. Increase nutrients
Regardless of which type of frost damage occurred, the plant will become very fragile at this point and needs an appropriate increase in organic fertilizer.
