A simple method to keep Phalaenopsis orchids from getting root rot; I've tried several potting mixes and think this one is pretty good

In places that are neither far south nor far north, Phalaenopsis orchids are not easy to grow. Winter temperatures are low, and even orchid roots brought into a greenhouse tend to rot. After trying several potting mixes, I think this method is pretty good.

1. Use foam or similar materials in the center that do not hold water and will not rot, to allow airflow, and put a small piece of foam at the bottom of the pot for airflow too. There is another consideration for using foam in the center: as the roots grow more and more, a very small pot definitely will not work, while a large pot does not dry out easily and the roots rot very easily. If the center does not hold water, the wet and dry conditions will be relatively even.

2. Using a transparent pot on the outside allows you to observe whether the roots are dry or wet (most of the rotted roots on the surface rotted last winter)

3. You can use plastic or similar material to fix it onto the foam so it does not wobble easily

My potting mix is Kanuma soil plus sphagnum moss. If you have New Zealand tree bark, you can add some too. Look below, the roots are growing pretty well, right?

Orchid roots like to grow along the pot wall, and the inside is not wet either, so dry and wet are clear at a glance

Because space is limited, and because the Phalaenopsis orchids I like to grow have leaves that hang down in their place of origin, I also let their flowers and leaves hang down. Here is a photo I just took in the office.
