In spring, all things revive. Not only do flowers and plants grow quickly, but pests also multiply very fast, so flowers and plants are prone to getting sick. Of course, orchids are no exception. We need to prevent orchids from getting southern blight. At home, of course, it is not very suitable to use pesticides to kill insects.

Southern blight is also called white silk disease. It affects the stem of the orchid plant near the surface of the potting soil, and white mycelium appears on the soil surface. In the later stage, the affected area tends to rot, soften and turn black, until the leaves wither.

1. Plant ash

For orchids that have already developed the disease, you might as well sprinkle a layer of plant ash on the potting soil. Plant ash is a slightly alkaline flower fertilizer. It can ease the acidity of the potting soil and also has a certain sterilizing effect, effectively inhibiting the spread of southern blight. However, orchids are flowers that prefer acidic conditions, so do not apply too much plant ash normally.

2. Lime

If the disease has already become relatively serious, we can take the orchid out of the flower pot, first soak the roots in a plant ash solution, and then after repotting, sprinkle a thin layer of lime on the surface of the potting soil. In this way, southern blight can basically be cured.

The main element of the plant ash mentioned above is potassium, and it can also provide orchids with certain nutrients. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are essential nutrients for orchids to bloom. Generally, when growing orchids, you can spread a thin layer of plant ash on the surface of the potting soil. This can keep orchid leaves green, make the seedlings strong, and also reduce anthracnose in orchids.
