If your balcony has extra space and there are empty flower pots sitting around, then as long as there is plenty of sunlight, you can grow some of the vegetables you eat often on the balcony. Green leafy vegetables, picked whenever you want to eat them, simple, fun and convenient. What vegetables are suitable for growing on a balcony in May and June?

What vegetables are really suitable for growing in summer and early summer? Based on my own personal experience of growing vegetables in summer over the past few years, and also drawing on some growing experiences from fellow gardeners, I have summed up the following vegetables, which are both easy to grow and delicious, and suitable for planting in May and June in summer:

1. Chili peppers, such as line peppers, green peppers and so on. The seeds must be reasonably fresh. Sow them directly into the soil in the flower pot, no transplanting needed.

Most chili seedlings do not need pinching out. Just fertilize more and keep the balcony ventilated. Before flowering, apply more fermented rice-washing water, decomposed chicken manure fertilizer and the like, and the plant will grow very large and set a lot of chilies.

2. Pak choi, napa cabbage. When sowing, do not scatter the whole bag of seeds at once.

Because leafy greens do not need transplanting, sow them directly into the pot, cover with 1 cm of soil, shade them and keep them moist, and keep them in a cool, ventilated state. When the temperature is a bit lower, they actually grow better.

3. Cherry radishes, or ordinary radishes. Generally, based on the experience of fellow vegetable growers, from sowing to harvest takes about two months. Actually that is pretty fast. They sprout quickly, and if there are too many seedlings, pull some out; there is no need to plant them too crowded.

During the period when the radishes are swelling, apply additional fertilizer in time. Cherry radishes can be made into pickles, and the texture is very good.

4. Cowpeas, suitable for sowing in May and June. You can use a larger long trough planter, with three seeds per hole.

Do not plant too densely in one pot. If it is too dense, thin the seedlings, and transplant the thinned seedlings into other pots.

When they start to climb, you need to set up a trellis. Once they enter the flowering and pod-setting period, you need to increase fertilizer and water. Cowpeas set an especially large number of pods.

5. Cucumbers. Sowing time: June and July are both fine, and early autumn works too.

The soil needs to be fertile, loose and breathable, so the seedlings grow strong. Give them plenty of sun and open the windows often for ventilation. After they set fruit, supplement with organic fertilizer water once every week.

6. Tomatoes. You can grow cherry tomatoes or large tomatoes. Plant one to two per flower pot. When they flower, just gently shake the branches.

During the flowering and fruiting period, they need more fertilizer. If there are many side shoots growing on the branches, remove some in time. The number of fruits they set will be very large.

Abundant harvest

What these vegetables have in common in terms of growing method is that, if you want to get a harvest, you must apply plenty of base fertilizer before planting. Whether it is chicken manure fertilizer, cake fertilizer or pigeon manure fertilizer, any of them will do. When planting out, choose a larger and deeper flower pot.

When dry, water in time, but there must be no standing water, and control pests in time. After germination, keep them in light and ventilated, and you will get a very good harvest. You will not be able to eat all the fresh vegetables.
