Ardisia crenata is an evergreen dwarf shrub of the genus Ardisia in the family Primulaceae. Its drupe is spherical, about the size of a pea, initially light green and turning bright red when ripe, remaining on the plant for a long time and looking very beautiful. There are also white or yellow varieties, and all of them can generally be used medicinally. Li Shizhen once described it: "Ardisia crenata grows deep in the mountains; the seedling is about a chi tall, the leaves resemble those of holly, the undersides of the leaves are entirely red, it grows luxuriantly in summer, the root is as large as a tendon and red in color; this is similar to Ardisia japonica." The root and the whole plant are used as medicine; it tastes bitter and is cool in nature. It has effects such as clearing heat and reducing fire, reducing swelling and detoxifying, invigorating blood and removing stasis, and eliminating phlegm and relieving cough. It mainly treats tonsillitis, toothache, traumatic injuries, rheumatic joint pain, leukorrhea in women, and menstrual pain.

Ardisia crenata

Ardisia crenata, also known as Ardisia japonica and "golden ten thousand taels," has the scientific name Ardisia crenata and belongs to the family Primulaceae. It is an evergreen small shrub. It has fleshy roots and blooms in early summer. Its drupe is spherical, 8-12 mm in diameter, and turns red in early winter, bright red with a glossy sheen. The fruiting period lasts more than 10 months or longer, bearing fruit year-round and remaining on the plant for a long time without falling.

The plant form of Ardisia crenata is beautiful and elegant, with fruit color bright red and almost dripping, and abundant fruit, with each plant bearing anywhere from 200 to 1,000 berries, each one uniform in color and quality, forming a strong contrasting color with the green leaves and dazzling to the eye. The clusters of red berries give people a warm, passionate, and lovesick sense of beauty, adding a feeling of success, festivity, wealth, and good fortune, and full of happiness and nobility, with extremely strong ornamental value. It once won the potted plant "Third Prize," "Silver Award," and "Best-Selling Product Award" at the 1st-3rd Cross-Strait Flower Expositions.

Due to the unique growing environment and required climatic conditions of Ardisia crenata, its artificial cultivation and breeding areas are limited by regional climate and geographical environment. The main cultivation areas are distributed in the mountainous areas of western Fujian, among which the artificial planting and breeding techniques in Wuping County, Longyan City, Fujian Province, are the most mature. Dongliu Township in Wuping County has been honored as the "Hometown of Ardisia crenata."

When placed indoors as a potted plant, it fully displays a scene of good fortune, festivity, wealth, and glory. If planted in masses under urban overpasses, in parks, courtyards, or under landscape forests, the green leaves and red berries complement each other, charmingly beautiful and pleasing to the eye and refreshing to the mind. At the Kunming World Expo and the First Cross-Strait Flower Exposition, Ardisia crenata won the highest award for fruit-ornamental flowers and was regarded by authoritative flower experts as "the anticipated product that will in the future overwhelm the largest-selling domestic fruit-ornamental flower product, the kumquat."
