Orchids need sunlight for photosynthesis, to produce nutrients and to promote the development and growth of leaf buds and flower buds. Therefore, light is indispensable for orchids. Especially in winter, the warming effect of sunlight should be put to full use to help orchids resist the cold and survive the winter. The light requirements of orchids differ according to season, region, variety and different variants. For example, Cymbidium sinense and Cymbidium kanran need less sunlight; Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium ensifolium need less light than Cymbidium faberi but more than Cymbidium sinense. Light intensity has a major effect on orchid growth and also greatly affects the ornamental value of orchids.

[1] The effect of light on leaf color. When light is too strong, the leaf color changes from green to pale green; if exposed to intense light, the leaf color quickly turns yellow, the leaf surface becomes coarse and may even become scorched and yellow, wither, and lose its ornamental value. When light is suitable, the leaves are green with a fine texture and a glossy sheen. When light is too weak, the leaf color is dark green with little gloss. Observing changes in leaf color can serve as one of the bases for shading, preventing dryness and excess moisture, and preventing and treating disease.

[2] The effect of light on budding and growth vigor. The intensity of light has a clear effect on the number, timing and growth vigor of leaf buds and flower buds emerging from the soil. When light is weaker, there are more leaf buds and fewer flower buds; when light is stronger, there are more flower buds and fewer leaf buds; when light is too strong, it is not conducive to the growth of young buds. If you want more leaf buds, besides reducing light intensity, you can remove excess flower buds, and results can be seen the following year. Only with moderate light can orchids grow luxuriantly.

[3] The effect of light on flower color and flowering period. When the light on the balcony is stronger and the light duration is longer, the flower color deepens; conversely, it becomes lighter. For example, yellow-flowered Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium faberi that receive longer and stronger light will deepen in color year by year and become golden-yellow flowers. Red-flowered Cymbidium ensifolium should get plenty of sun in summer; this not only produces more flowers and advances the flowering period, but also makes the red deeper. During the flowering period, if you want to extend the flowering period, you can place it in a cool, shady spot and be careful to water less.
