Five Key Points for Flower Care Management in Summer: Plenty of Water and Fertilizer, Seize the Opportunity to Promote Growth

Summer is the period of vigorous growth for most flowers, and also the golden time for flower cuttings. However, summer is also a season of hot weather, abundant rainfall, and widespread outbreaks of pests and diseases, so management must be strengthened.
1. Proper cooling
Summer is the season of midsummer, with the sun blazing like fire. Many flowers cannot adapt to such excessively high temperatures, and even sun-loving flowers need proper shading around noon.

2. Timely watering
Due to the high temperatures in summer, water evaporates quickly, so timely watering is needed. However, you should not water at noon when the sun is shining directly; it is best to water once in the morning and once in the evening. It is worth noting that different flowers have different water requirements. Flowers with large leaves and thin leaves can be watered more, while cacti and flowers with small leaves or needle-like leaves can be watered less because their water evaporation is low. Watering in summer should also be flexibly adjusted according to the weather. On days with a blazing sun, water more; on cloudy days, water less; and on rainy days, do not water. You should also observe the dryness or moisture of the potting soil to decide whether to water more, water less, or not water at all. During consecutive rainy days in summer, you should also provide proper rain protection or tilt the pots so that accumulated water drains out in time to prevent root rot.
3. Timely fertilizing
Flowers grow quickly in summer and consume a lot of nutrients, so sufficient fertilizer needs to be supplied in time. However, summer fertilizing should also be tailored to different flowers. For ordinary potted flowers, apply a diluted decomposed liquid fertilizer once every week. For flowers that prefer acidic soil, such as camellias, azaleas, and poinsettias, apply diluted alum fertilizer water once every week. Fertilizer water should be applied when the soil is relatively dry. Before fertilizing, loosen the potting soil first so that the flower roots can fully absorb it. When fertilizing, also avoid getting the fertilizer water on the leaves to prevent leaf damage, and remember to water once the next day after fertilizing. It is best to fertilize in the evening.

4. Pruning
Flowers grow very quickly in summer. Overgrown branches and leaves that affect the beauty of the plant shape and flowering and fruiting, as well as crossing branches, overgrown branches, densely growing branches, and diseased or dead branches that affect ventilation and light penetration, all need to be pruned in time. For some spring-sown flowers, when they grow to a certain height, pinching is needed to encourage more branching and more blooming; for some woody flowers, when the current year's branches grow to nearly 20 cm, pinching is also needed to stimulate more new branches and increase the number of flowers. Some adventitious buds on the branches and trunks will ruin the flower shape and should be removed in time. For ornamental flowers such as chrysanthemums, dahlias, and peonies, some excess flower buds and side buds should be removed to promote larger and more colorful blooms; for fruit-ornamental flowers such as pomegranates and finger citrons, some excess young fruits should be removed in time so that the fruits can grow large and plump.
5. Cuttings and sowing
Summer is a good time for taking cuttings of evergreen flowers and trees. Some annual herbaceous flowers, such as pansies and cinerarias, can also be sown in summer; sown in July, they can bloom after National Day.
