Gardenia blooms are pure white with a light fragrance. If you keep a pot at home, a faint fresh scent will drift through the air. A well-grown gardenia is both beautiful and appealing, but when caring for one you will inevitably run into some problems. For example, some flower lovers report that their gardenia develops yellow leaves while growing, and the buds on the branches drop off for no reason before they even open, which is heartbreaking to see. Today I want to share with you the reasons why this happens with gardenia and what to pay attention to, so that from now on everyone can keep their gardenia especially healthy.

1. Gardenia must not be exposed to blazing sun during care

Everyone knows the weather is getting hotter and the sun is getting stronger. If you put the gardenia on a balcony to care for it at this time, then because the sunlight on the balcony is quite intense, the gardenia can easily get scorched, and after being scorched it will develop yellow leaves and drop buds.

So when the sunlight is quite intense, be sure to give the gardenia proper shade and don't let it be exposed to blazing sun. You can also move it to a different spot and place it somewhere out of direct sunlight for bright indirect light care. That way the gardenia won't develop yellow leaves or drop buds.

2. Do not give the gardenia too much water

When caring for a gardenia, watering is absolutely necessary, but when watering you need to be careful: if you water too much, the gardenia's roots can't breathe properly and will rot, which makes the leaves turn yellow and the buds drop.

So when caring for a gardenia, do not give it too much water; just keep the potting soil moist. In normal care you can also spray some water on the leaves to keep the gardenia's growing environment at a certain humidity. That way the gardenia can grow better and you can also avoid yellow leaves and dropped buds.

3. Gardenia must be fertilised during care

For gardenia, you cannot skip fertilising it during care, because the gardenia needs certain elements replenished as it grows. If you don't fertilise it in time at this point, the nutrients won't be enough, and the gardenia will develop yellow leaves and drop flower buds.

So during growth you must replenish certain elements, such as iron. If yellow leaves and dropped flower buds appear, you can apply 0.2% black alum water or ferrous sulfate water, which will increase the iron in the soil and keep the gardenia from developing yellow leaves and dropping flower buds.
