May is the best time to plant geraniums. Geraniums have a long flowering period and strong adaptability to the environment, and their plant size suits home pot cultivation, making them highly popular among flower-growing friends. Let's take a look together at these little geranium care tips~

Geranium

Growth habits

Geraniums like a warm climate environment, dislike high temperatures, and are not cold-tolerant. The suitable growing temperature for geraniums is between 15-25°C. When grown indoors in winter, it should be kept at 10°C; below 5°C, cold damage may occur. In summer high temperatures, when the temperature exceeds 35°C, the plant will enter a dormant state. Try to maintain ventilation and avoid a stuffy, unventilated environment, which is not good for the plant's growth.

Soil selection

For potted geraniums, choose a loose, fertile, well-draining, slightly alkaline soil. You can use 50% leaf mold soil, 30% garden soil, 15% coarse sand or perlite, plus 5% organic fertilizer mixed into the growing medium. Repot regularly every spring and autumn, or loosen the soil in time.

Fertilizing method

During the geranium's growing period, apply a thin liquid fertilizer once every 10-15 days, and during the vigorous growth periods of spring and autumn, apply liquid fertilizer once every 7-10 days; before flower buds form, mainly apply nitrogen fertilizer, and after buds appear, mainly apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. It is best to fertilize in the evening and water the next morning. In summer high temperatures when the plant is dormant, fertilizing should be stopped.

Watering method

Geraniums should be watered appropriately, better dry than wet. During the vigorous growth periods of spring and autumn, geraniums should have their water needs met, and the soil should often be kept moist, but not waterlogged; on cloudy days or in the rainy season, generally no watering is needed, and no fertilizing either.

Geraniums grown on a balcony

Finally, the flower meaning: geraniums are not afraid of strong light, but when grown outdoors in summer, they should be properly shaded at noon. Geraniums in the sun grow robustly, with deep green leaves, short internodes, and a beautiful plant shape. Finally, I hope this is helpful in your growing process~
