What to Do When ZZ Plant Leaves Turn Yellow? Causes and Solutions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
There are many reasons why ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) leaves turn yellow. If it is caused by lack of water, increase watering. If it is caused by too much watering, loosen the soil and improve ventilation so the excess water evaporates. If it is caused by light that is too strong, shade it. If it is caused by not repotting for a long time, give it fresh, nutrient-rich soil. If it is caused by natural metabolism, no special treatment is needed.

1. Increase watering

Cause: Not watering for a long time causes the ZZ plant to become dehydrated, a series of physiological and biochemical reactions cannot proceed normally, and thus yellow leaves appear.

Solution: Water it promptly, but do not pour too much at one time.

2. Reduce watering

Cause: Watering the ZZ plant too much damages its root system, which affects its ability to absorb nutrients, causing the leaves to lack nutrients and turn yellow.

Solution: Loosen the soil of the ZZ plant, then place it in a ventilated spot to dry out so the water in the soil evaporates, then water it according to proper methods.

3. Reduce light

Cause: If the ZZ plant is exposed to strong light for a long time in summer, its leaves will be scorched by the sun and begin to turn yellow.

Solution: Use a suitable shading method to shade the ZZ plant.

4. Change its soil

Cause: If the ZZ plant is not repotted and given new soil for a long time, the remaining nutrients in the soil can hardly support its continued growth, and the leaves lacking nutrients will therefore turn yellow.

Solution: Give the ZZ plant new soil that is nutrient-rich and rich in humus.

5. Metabolism

Cause: As the ZZ plant grows to a certain stage, some leaves age and turn yellow.

Solution: No special treatment is needed; with normal care it will recover on its own.
