Kalanchoe luciae is a perennial succulent herbaceous plant in the Crassulaceae family and the Kalanchoe genus, native to Cape Province and Transvaal Province in South Africa. Its English names are Paddle plant and Desert's cabbage. The plant grows about 50-60 cm tall and about 20-30 cm wide. The stem is somewhat thick, covered with a white powder, grayish-white, and much branched; the leaves are opposite, closely arranged, resembling a rose shape, with an ovate to rounded leaf shape, 10-15 cm long and 5-10 cm wide, entire, with a blunt tip. The leaf color is pale green, covered with a thick layer of white powder, appearing grayish-green, and the leaf margin has a ring of red lines. In cool seasons, outdoors with sufficient sunlight, layered red patches will appear along the leaf margins. From the top of the stem extends a 50-70 cm flower stalk, with tubular yellow flowers about 1.5 cm long, closely arranged in a panicle; the flowers will continue to bloom for a very long period, until adventitious bud flower stalk plantlets grow on the flower stalk, at which point the mother plant will wither. The stem is sturdy, and the leaf shape and color are rather beautiful, giving it a certain ornamental value.

Kalanchoe luciae was introduced to China not long ago. Its leaves are large, the leaf color is beautiful, and the plant shape is also very attractive. It is an excellent foliage plant among succulents. Besides being grown in pots for ornamental purposes, it can also be shaped into bonsai or planted in the ground for garden departments to arrange succulent plant greenhouses, all with good results.

For propagation of Kalanchoe luciae, bud cuttings, leaf cuttings, or stem segments with leaves used as cuttings can all be done during the warm growing season. Remove the flower stalk plantlets, dry them slightly in shade, and then plant them in pots, or dry the leaves or cuttings slightly for 1-2 days until the wounds heal, then insert them into a mixed medium of coarse sand or perlite and vermiculite, keep moist, and protect from rain and direct strong light (about 40% shading). They will root in about 20-35 days. Actually, seeds can also be used for propagation, but it takes longer. The seeds are light brown and quite small, so they can be sown in a shallow tray and covered with a thin layer of fine sand. The shallow tray can be covered with plastic film or glass to maintain humidity, and a little fungicide can be sprayed first to prevent the seedlings from fungal diseases. They will germinate in about 15-30 days.

After the cuttings have rooted or the seedlings have grown larger, they can be planted in pots. A mixture of 4 parts coarse river sand (fine expanded clay or unglazed fired stone) plus 4 parts fine river sand, and one part each of organic potting soil, perlite, and vermiculite can be used for planting. Initially, they can be planted in 3.5-inch pots, and larger containers can be chosen according to growth conditions, or they can be planted in open-air flower beds.
