The peony originated in our country. It was first recorded in the Wuwei medical bamboo slips of the early Eastern Han dynasty. It was already cultivated by the Tang dynasty. After Empress Wu Zetian ascended the throne, peonies were moved to Chang'an from her hometown. Thereafter, they flourished in the city of Chang'an. During the Song dynasty, Luoyang peonies reigned supreme in the world. Legend has it that on a snowy winter day, Wu Zetian wanted all the flowers to bloom at once, so she wrote an edict: "Tomorrow I shall stroll in the imperial garden, urgently inform the spring; the flowers must bloom overnight, do not wait for the morning wind to urge them." All the flowers dared not disobey and had no choice but to bloom, yet only the peony did not stir in the least. Wu Zetian flew into a rage and banished the peony to Luoyang. Who would have thought that after arriving in Luoyang, the peonies bloomed in a riot of color? Wu Zetian ordered the peonies burned to death, but unexpectedly, the more they burned, the redder and more brilliant the peonies became. From then on, "Luoyang peonies are the finest under heaven."
