Fast Shaping of Fruit Tree Bonsai: 9 Points to Note in the Branch Group Grafting Method

In the making of fruit tree bonsai, the branch grafting method is often used to achieve fast shaping. The biggest advantage of branch grafting is that the scion can be selected from 1-3 year old large branch groups.
Large branch grafting usually uses the cleft grafting method, with a high survival rate and fast grafting. Graft scions of different sizes onto the rootstock, grafting in different directions and positions to form different shapes, rapidly forming the bonsai shape.

9 points to note in branch group grafting
From February to early March, deciduous fruit tree potted grafting through low-temperature treatment can remove the scion and rootstock from dormancy, enabling them to grow normally. Strictly control the temperature; the best daytime temperature is 20-25 degrees Celsius. At night it is kept at about 10 degrees Celsius. Usually the temperature rises in the first 10 days after grafting, but becomes lower afterward. After grafting, cover with a plastic bag to retain moisture; at this time pay attention to air humidity. In the first half of the year, if the relative air humidity exceeds 95%, it can be reduced to about 75%. During fruit selection, choose the scion from a large tree. 2-3 year old branches are ideal; the top of the tree is chosen from the middle and center of the east. It is worth noting that the branch group must grow vigorously, with plump tissue, short internodes, and plump winter buds; large branches and thin branches are not used. The rootstock branches should be pruned according to the shape and form of the rootstock before grafting. The scion must be used together with mining to keep it fresh. So when we go to get it, we must consider how to use it. Choose a suitable scion-rootstock combination. For example, the same tree can be grafted at the same flowering time with different color varieties, which can make the bonsai more beautiful. Finally, the rootstock of a bonsai tree is usually more than three years old and can be used for more than ten years.
