Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) is very beautiful, with rich and colorful blooms and brilliant colors that lift your mood the moment you see them. This plant also has fairly strong vitality and can survive in high-altitude areas. Because it has many roots, it grows very quickly. Generally speaking, cosmos can grow to more than one meter tall, and some horticultural varieties bred today are a little shorter, but still around eighty cm tall.
As a fairly popular ornamental flower today, cosmos is deeply loved by gardening enthusiasts. Some enthusiasts plant cosmos on their balconies, so that every spring and summer they can see their brilliant blooms. However, growing cosmos still has some difficulties, so now let's share some cosmos care experience with everyone!
1. Sowing
Cosmos has a relatively high germination rate, so sowing should not be too dense. In a one-gallon pot, do not sow more than ten seeds. After sowing, keep the soil slightly moist, and germination takes about one week. Generally sow in spring and summer.
2. Pinching
After germination, when the plant has roughly grown four to five pairs of leaves, you can pinch off the growing tip. Pinch the top off directly and leave only two pairs of leaves; afterward you can also prune and adjust at any time. Pinching helps dwarf the plant, promotes the growth of side buds, and makes the plant grow more robust. The part pinched off can also be used for cuttings.
3. Care
Cosmos is very fond of sun, so ensure light conditions during growth. In summer, replenish water in time, otherwise it easily loses water and wilts. Under conditions of insufficient light and too much water, the plant tends to grow leggy, so control water well: water when the soil is dry, and do not let it become waterlogged.
4. Fertilizing
Cosmos does not need fertilizing. This is not to say it dislikes fertilizer, but that the nutrients in the soil are already enough to support its growth and flowering, so no extra supplement is needed. If your hand slips and you add too much, burning the seedlings would not be worth it. Do not place potted plants in a place with too much wind; the seedlings are thin and weak and can be blown crooked with one careless gust. If the plant grows leggy, you can cut it off and use it for cuttings.
5. Saving Seeds
After flowering in autumn, you can collect its seeds, put them in a paper bag and store them in a dry environment, and wait until the next year to sow again. Come on, plant a pot of your own cosmos.
Cosmos propagation tip: cuttings
Cosmos cuttings should be taken in warm May, and they can bloom in June-July.
You can select sturdy top branches and cut a section 8 cm to 10 cm long as a cutting. Insert 3 to 5 cuttings as a clump in a flower pot. The pot should be buried in the soil, with 4 cm to 5 cm exposed above ground. Water and shade it, and it will root after half a month.
